A Not-So-Frightening 4k

October 28, 2013

On Saturday, Matt & I ran in a race. It wasn’t a big one, but it was fun.

The Frightening 4k, hosted by Skinny Raven Sports in Anchorage had 600 people dressed in costume running through the streets of Anchorage. The best part of this race was the fact that at ever kilometer, there was a Candy Aid Station. Yeah, you got candy. every .6 miles. People much smarter than us brought trick-or-treat bins and bags to put their candy in – we just put ours in Matt’s pocket.

Now I’ve never been known for being good at Halloween. I’m terrible at picking out good costumes, and I’m not creative enough to come up with the punny ones that you see every year.

But I finally think I nailed it:

Team Condiment!

Team Condiment!

The great thing about these costumes was 1. We matched! Yay, our first couples costume in 6 Halloweens together! and 2. It was warm to wear.

There were some really great costumes at the race. I loved a set of minions that made sure to talk in the minion language. But these two kids really took the cake:

They dressed up as laundry and A LIGHT UP ROBOT!

When it became time to run, we all lined up with our breath clearly visible and any expose skin already a bright red. Amazingly, we ran in 35 degree weather today. Apparently, that’s 20 degrees warmer than it was last year (WHERE AM I??)

It was a fun race though! A few spots we ran on we had to walk because the roads were iced over (!!!) and we didn’t want to risk my clumsiness and having to take a bottle of ketchup to the E.R.

One thing I really like about Skinny Raven Sports races is that they call names as you cross the finish line. Or, in the case of this race, they described your costume. So as we ran across, everyone got to hear “And it’s Ketchup and Mustard, coming in together! Yay team condiment!”

Our times weren’t terrible, but we’re still new runners. Maybe we will improve for next time. Here’s how we did:

Afterwards, we walked to one of our favourite spots for lunch. Several people smiled and waved, and Mustard got several cat calls. (Apparently, Ketchup isn’t as great as Mustard).

And to finish: Here is Matt dressed as Mustard, holding a bottle of Mustard. Enjoy!
